Foster for us

At CATS rescue we aim to try and rescue stray or feral cats that need our help. Our experience shows that there is a dramatic improvement in the rescue cats' healing process when they are placed in a foster home.

We always need volunteer fosterers that can rehabilitate our cats. It can take weeks to help these cats learn to trust humans and it is so rewarding to see these cats go on to loving homes and become part of a family.

Our fosterers are from diverse backgrounds bringing a huge wealth of skills and experience to the team. The most important thing that they have in common is that they all love cats.

A foster's story

Sally from Gloucester

Sally, from Gloucester, started fostering cats for us a few years ago. She finds it incredibly rewarding working with the cats helping them to learn to trust people again and seeing their personalities develop when they’re in her care.

“I receive lots of help and support from CATS Rescue when I foster their cats. While it’s never easy to say goodbye to my foster baby I’m very happy knowing they’re going to their forever home with a loving family. "

What's involved in fostering?

It's our foster carers that make us different.

The cats that we take into our care are the stray, injured cats and kittens that people struggle to get close to.

Some of our rescued cats are not used to human contact and need lots of reassurance before they learn to trust again. Patience and confidence are key.

All our cats in foster care have been to the vets for neutering and have had their medical needs addressed. The fosterer may need to take the cat in their care for routine follow-up vet appointments and vaccinations.

All the cat's medical needs, food and litter costs are covered by CATS Rescue.

How to foster

A foster cat needs its own room. This can be a bedroom, utility room or another suitable room that we believe is a clean and suitable environment for the cat to thrive in.

Many of our cats have come from difficult backgrounds so are nervous and stressed, so they do well in a quieter foster-home environment.

If foster carers have their own cats then they will need to be up to date with their own vaccinations. This helps to ensure all the cats in the household are protected.

Before accepting a new foster carer, we will complete a home check to ensure placing a cat in the environment will be in the cat's best interest.

Experience with cats is essential, as the cats we take into our care are the most vulnerable and have extra care needs.

Whilst fostering one of our cats, we always ensure that there will be another volunteer available to talk to for advice and support.
